CELEBRATE 920 PSILOCYBIN DAY WITH PAUL STAMETS

Psychedelic science is making a comeback! Come be a part of the mushrooming psychedelic renaissance on 920 Psilocybin Day with famed mycologist Paul Stamets at Portland’s Newmark Theater September 20, 2018.

This event is presented by the Portland Psychedelic Society and PSI-2020.

Stamets will present his talk, Psilocybin Mushrooms and the Mycology of Consciousness: Immersion into the MycoVerse.
 
Stamets is an engaging speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher, and entrepreneur. In this informative lecture he will deepen your understanding and respect for the fungi that exist under literally every footstep on life’s path.

Stamets is known for his stunning, planet-saving breakthrough discoveries in mycological research — something he credits to his early, consciousness-raising experiences with psilocybin mushrooms.

Psilocybin mushrooms have likely been used for millions of years. Their ability to enhance brain chemistry has attracted the interest of pharmacologists, evolutionary biologists, ethnomycologists, artists, writers, addiction and trauma specialists, and, more recently, computer language coders.

Stamets will examine the Stoned Ape Theory — the theory that psilocybin contributed to human evolution. He will also recap psilocybin’s historical milestones, describe some of the more significant psilocybin species, and discuss new research showing how mushrooms can help the health of people and the planet. 

Habitats have immune systems, just like people, and mushrooms are cellular bridges between humans and the natural environment. Our close evolutionary relationship to fungi could be the basis for novel pairings in the human microbiome that could not only strengthen our immune systems but promote a more sustainable relationship with the planet.
 
Stamets is the author of six books, including Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World; Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms; and Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World. He has also discovered and named numerous new species of psilocybin mushrooms.
 
He has received numerous awards, including Invention Ambassador (2014-2015) for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Mycologist Award (2014) from the North American Mycological Association (NAMA), and the Gordon & Tina Wasson Award (2015) from the Mycological Society of America (MSA). 

His work has also entered mainstream culture via the new Star Trek Discovery series by CBS—the Science Officer is portrayed as an “astromycologist,” a Lt. Paul Stamets. Stamets’ work with mycelium is a central theme of this series.

Opening for Stamets are Portland area psychotherapists Tom and Sheri Eckert, who give voice to a powerful grassroots agenda to legalize the therapeutic use of psilocybin. Their talk, a call to action, is called Stepping into the Light.

As husband-and-wife founders of the Oregon Psilocybin Society and designers of breakthrough legislative language, the Eckerts have set in motion Oregon’s historic PSI-2020 ballot initiative campaign (www.psi-2020.org), aimed at bringing the psilocybin service modality above ground. A growing number of Oregonians endorse the approach, largely in response to the latest science from top institutions around the world.

From their vantage at the nexus of psilocybin science and policy reform, Tom and Sheri will unpack the latest discoveries, decipher the implications, and light a path to the future.
