Taxidermy Class Hosted by Heather Clark of The Sleeping Sirens Arts and Oddities
Join us for an immersive and hands-on experience as we delve into the fascinating world of taxidermy in our introductory class!

Our class is designed to be a safe and respectful environment for both students and animals. We use ethically sourced specimens or ethically acquired materials to ensure that our taxidermy practices align with modern conservation values.
This introductory taxidermy class is perfect for individuals aged 18 and above who are interested in exploring a unique blend of art, science, and history.
Whether you're an aspiring taxidermist, an artist looking to expand your skills, or someone with a general curiosity about the craft, you'll find this class both enlightening and rewarding. (Individuals under the age of 18 are permitted to attend class on a case-by-case basis. Please send us an email for further information.)
We will provide all necessary materials, including a small animal specimen, for you to work on during the class. Participants are welcome to bring their own gloves and aprons if desired.

Course Overview:
In this hands-on workshop, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of butterfly pinning techniques and preservation methods. Whether you're a beginner with no prior experience or an enthusiast looking to refine your skills, this class is designed to accommodate all levels of interest and expertise.
What You Will Learn:
Introduction to Entomology: Explore the fascinating world of insects and learn about the anatomy, life cycle, and diversity of butterflies.
Ethical Collection Practices:
Understand the importance of ethical and responsible butterfly collecting, including considerations for conservation and legality.
Pinning Techniques:
Master the delicate art of spreading butterfly wings, positioning them symmetrically, and securing them with insect pins.
Drying and Mounting:
Discover the drying and mounting process, including how to set butterflies in lifelike positions for display.
Display Options:
Explore various methods of mounting and displaying preserved butterflies, from traditional shadow boxes to modern artistic presentations.
Preservation Tips:
Receive valuable tips on preserving the colors and condition of your specimens for long-term enjoyment.

- Spreading boards, pins, and other equipment for hands-on practice.

Note:
Students will be provided with a total of 2 specimens. The first will be used to practice spreading and pinning your butterfly while the second, which is already dried, will be used for placement in your shadow box.
All students will leave with a completed shadow box terrarium that includes your mounted butterfly and an increased knowledge and love for entomology!
This workshop promotes ethical and responsible practices in butterfly preservation. All butterfly specimens used are sourced ethically, and participants are encouraged to respect legal and conservation guidelines when collecting or purchasing butterflies for their personal collections.
