Upcycled Plateau Basketry Basics
Cultural Tourism Lifeways "Make Your Own" Workshop
Event Information
This workshop uses recycled plastic grocery bags to construct a Columbia Plateau basket.
April 22, 2022, marks the celebration of “Earth Day.” This Cultural Tourism Lifeways Workshop blends the celebration of a modern movement towards environmental protection and awareness with a centuries-old technique of basket making used by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. For countless generations the Coeur d’Alene Tribe has used a time-perfected technique of twining to create round baskets, also referred to as “Sally Bags.”
The Coeur d’Alene Tribe has long been known as stewards of the environment. This Cultural Tourism Lifeways workshop gives us an opportunity to make an “upcycled” basket with plastic bags that may have ended up in the landfill.
This is a 6-hour hands-on weaving workshop. Suitable for ages 15 and over
All necessary supplies will be provided. This workshop will include refreshments, snacks, a $10 EPC, and a meal voucher. Reminder – meals are on your own and not provided during the workshops.
