 Herold:  Overture to Zampa

German: Autumn and Winter from “The Seasons”

This concert will feature the famous Zampa overture and two works by Edward German which should be much better known.  Born in 1791, Louis Joseph Ferdinand Hérold was for a time considered one of France’s greatest composers.  His penultimate opera Zampa is based on the Don Juan legend, the same story which brought fame to Mozart and Strauss.  This well-known overture juxtaposes five of the opera’s main themes and ends with a brilliant and exciting accelerando.

Edward German is often compared to his contemporaries Edward Elgar and Arthur Sullivan for his ability to write both serious and lighter music.  His symphonic suite “The Seasons” blends both elements into an extremely attractive programmatic work.  Autumn depicts the nostalgia often associated with the transition from summer to winter, while the storms of Christmastide give way to a festive dance appropriate for the tender joys of Christmas.
