Spokane Symphony Classics Series—Sunday
The 2017-18 Classics Series commemorates the Tenth anniversary of the reopening of Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox with the return of the Grammy Award-winning, internationally renowned Thomas Hampson for a concert of selections from popular operas. The season opens with Zemlinsky’s romantic rendition of Hans Christian Anderson’s tale, The Mermaid and concludes with Rachmaninoff’s unabashedly romantic Piano Concerto No. 1 and Tchaikovsky's shimmering First Symphony. Other headliners include pianist Conrad Tao, who returns to perform Saint-Saëns’ exquisite Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most challenging of the piano repertoire, and the celebrated Ahn Trio playing Mark O’Connor’s Triple Concerto.
Series will showcase works by the “Three Bs of classical music” – Bach, Beethoven Brahms. 2018 marks the 333rd anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach, and to celebrate, five of the Classics concerts will open with one of his compositions. In addition, the season includes Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 and his Symphony No. 5, one of the most popular symphonies of all time. Experience Johannes Brahms’ rarely performed Concerto for Violin and Cello, and Mateusz Wolski fiery rendition of his technically demanding Violin Concerto. Music Director Eckart Preu has planned additional musical gems, including Rimsky-Korsakov’s blockbuster Scheherazade, Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 “The Great,” Debussy's impressionistic Iberia and Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony. Classics subscribers choose either Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. or Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m.
